There are times when I have complete moments of clarity about how and why God created us for community. For me, I experience some of my greatest moments of encouragement in community. There is nothing like fellowshipping with like-minded believers. As women, we’re especially designed for community. It’s crucial for us to surround ourselves with women who can love, support and challenge us.
I recently had a moment of great clarity and joy regarding community this past weekend. I was on the phone with a friend who lives about 1,500 miles away from me. She is a high school friend so as a result we’ve gone through a lot of life together. We were talking about a very personal topic and she asked me how things were going for me regarding this topic. I gave my go-to response and then she said something that brought such joy to my heart, she said, “so how are you really feeling about it?” My heart smiled, as I knew this friend of mine understood my heart and was ready to journey through another season of life with me.
Those moments remind me of scripture when Solomon states that,
“A friend loves at all times..” -Proverbs 17:17
or later in Proverbs,
“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” -Proverbs 27:17
God was very intentional and purposeful in designing us for community. While I definitely think His character is demonstrated through our relationships in how we love each other, I also think a lot of his creativity is shown off in how and with whom we develop those relationships. I have so many incredible women in my life who fulfill different roles at different times. It always amazes me how God can use so many different women to touch my life in different ways.
This idea was so prevalent in my life that when I married my husband, I gave all the ladies in my bridal party this poem entitled, “The Girls in My Circle.” I attached a picture of it below…see if you relate. As for me, I’m incredibly thankful for God’s design of community!
