I’ve never been one to set New Year resolutions. I can’t really explain why. Maybe it’s because I fear letting myself down or others down; maybe it’s the possibility of failure that prevents me from setting them. Either way, it’s this time of year – every year – that makes me thankful that in Christ I don’t need the page on a calendar to change in order to have a new beginning. Check out this verse from the book of Lamentations:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. –Lamentations 3:22,23
His compassions are new every morning…talk about a fresh start! This verse is a wonderful reminder in March when I’ve lost my patience with someone or in June when I’m cranky and short or August when I’m worrying or December when I’ve lost sight of Jesus amid the holiday scramble that my new beginning can start at any moment. I don’t have to wait for the calendar to tell me I get to start fresh. I simply approach the throne and surrender my feeble, sin-laden self and am reminded that Jesus makes me new.
Whether you’ve set New Year resolutions or not, my encouragement to you is this: there is no time in the upcoming year when you cannot have a fresh start. Let’s state that the positive way, every day is a new beginning with our Lord Jesus Christ!
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
