I’ve never been one to set New Year resolutions. I can’t really explain why. Maybe it’s because I fear letting myself down or others down; maybe it’s the possibility of failure that prevents me from setting them. Either way, it’s this time of year – every year – that makes me thankful that in Christ I don’t need the page on a calendar to turn in order to have a new beginning. Check out this verse from the book of Lamentations:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. –Lamentations 3:22,23
His compassions are new every morning…talk about a fresh start! This verse is a wonderful reminder in March when I’ve lost my patience with someone or in June when I’m cranky and short or August when I’m worrying or December when I’ve lost sight of Jesus amid the holiday scramble. My new beginning can start at any moment. I don’t have to wait for the calendar to tell me I get to start fresh. I simply approach the throne and surrender my feeble, sin-laden self and am reminded that Jesus makes me new.
Whether you’ve set New Year resolutions or not, my encouragement to you is this: new beginnings are available at any moment through Jesus!
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
