Last week, in a room full of about 25 6th and 7th grade girls, I spent an hour talking to them about God’s promises – specifically about his covenants. We looked at the covenant God made with Noah after the whole earth was flooded and His promise to Noah to never flood the entire earth again and wipe out all of humanity. We also looked at some other Old Testament promises that God had made to Adam, Eve and Abraham. We could have looked at plenty more.
I began asking them what promises they knew of – promises that God had made to them. I heard comments that God was coming back again, that if they honored their parents they would would live long and abundantly, that God would not forsake them. So many promises and I loved hearing them from the mouths of 12 and 13 year olds.
Lately, I’ve been very thankful for God’s promises. Two are especially resounding upon my heart lately:
If the Lord delights in a man’s ways, He makes his steps firm. -Psalm 37:23
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. -Ephesians 3:20
Can you tell what’s on my heart? God’s plan, purpose & intention for my life. I cling to these promises, especially as of late, because I can’t help but think that God wants to use me in big ways if I would allow Him.
Learning from the lives and stories of those in the Old Testament, I know that my God is faithful and true which makes these promises even more exciting. He will fulfill them and in doing so will do more than I could ever ask or imagine!
