Recently my 21-month-old son has been playing this game with my husband and me where he will sit on the floor and simply fall backwards. He does this because he knows we will catch him; he trusts that we will catch him. He giggles the whole time doing it as if to surprise us but we can see that he has great delight in the free fall. While it can be a little unnerving if you’re not expecting his free fall, I couldn’t help but think about how God so longs for us to have that type of trust in Him – where we simply fall into Him.
I think about all the calls Christ gives us to fall into Him:
“Come to me all who are weary and heavy burdened and I will give you rest.” –Matthew 11:28
“Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.” -1 Peter 5:7
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” –John 15:4
Christ beckons us to fall into Him. Is He not trustworthy enough for us to fall into Him?! I submit to you that He is; He is more than able! And He even says that He is! Listen to what Jesus says in the book of Matthew:
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” -Matthew 6:25-33
Friend, Jesus longs to care for us. He desires to be our stronghold, our cornerstone, our fortress. However, it is up to us to fall into Him. And believe it or not, there can be great delight in the free fall of surrender! He is able and He is capable to take on all your sin, worry, anxiety, circumstances and burdens. But now we must make the decision to trust Him and free fall into arms that will catch us.
